Got a new Samsung Galaxy phone? Here's how to transfer everything from your old device quickly and easily — contacts, photos, apps, settings, and more.
Method 1: Samsung Smart Switch (Recommended)
Samsung Smart Switch is the easiest way to move everything from your old phone. It transfers contacts, messages, photos, videos, apps, settings, and even your home screen layout.
Step 1: Download Smart Switch
Smart Switch is pre-installed on most Samsung Galaxy phones (Android 9+). If not, download it free from the Google Play Store. iPhone users can find it on the App Store too.
Step 2: Connect Your Phones
Two options: connect via USB-C cable (faster and more reliable) or wirelessly over Wi-Fi. Open Smart Switch on both phones and follow the on-screen prompts.
Step 3: Select Data & Transfer
Choose which data to transfer (we recommend selecting all). Smart Switch will show a progress bar and estimated time. Most transfers complete within 10-30 minutes.
Step 4: Sign In & Restore Apps
Once complete, sign in to your Google and Samsung accounts. Apps will automatically re-download from the Play Store.
Method 2: Google Account Backup
- On your old phone: Settings > Google > Backup > enable backup > tap "Back up now"
- On your new Samsung: during setup, sign in to the same Google account and choose "Restore from Google backup"
This transfers contacts, apps, Wi-Fi passwords, and settings. Ensure Google Photos is backed up separately for your photos.
Method 3: Manual Photo Transfer
- Google Photos: Sign in on your new phone and all backed-up photos appear automatically
- microSD card: Move the SD card from your old phone to your new Samsung
- USB to PC: Copy files to your computer, then paste to your new device
Switching from iPhone to Samsung
Samsung Smart Switch works with iPhones too. Connect via Lightning-to-USB-C cable and Smart Switch transfers contacts, messages, photos, music, and more. iCloud-only data won't transfer, but core essentials will.
Before You Start: Quick Checklist
- Charge both phones to at least 50%
- Back up your old phone (Google Backup + Google Photos)
- Note any app login details you'll need
- Insert your SIM into your new Samsung (all AZ Electronics phones are unlocked for all UK networks)
